Why Feedback-Informed Treatment(FIT)?

Why Feedback-Informed Treatment(FIT)?

When asking a client for feedback using the Feedback-Informed Treatment (FIT) tools, a therapist/counselor pays heed to the client’s state of mind. FIT engages both parties. This breeds synergy and understanding where client and counselor/therapist are bound together by a common goal.

Many therapists know that, even if they are extremely well-versed in theory and experience, they can’t escape from bias. Everyone is vulnerable to being less objective than they could be.  And that can lead to decisions that may not be best for a particular client. Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) offers the opportunity to make decisions that are more informed and rooted in real-time feedback and tangible evidence–not just based on theories or a gut-feeling based on years of experience.

MyOutcomes’ Session Rating Scale (SRS) and Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) is a brief survey to help monitor and track the progress of therapy.  The SRS is used before and after a session to rate the experience of that particular session. This real-time feedback lets therapists/counselors get a better understanding of the ongoing care, and can help them find ways to further enhance it.  Using a graph, counselors/therapists can visually evaluate the client feedback.

The use of feedback is a promising way to increase the effectiveness of treatment and shape the trajectory of the client towards a favorable outcome. Using FIT allows for more awareness and informed decisions rather than just relying on experience and secondary research.

When asking a client for feedback using the FIT tools, the therapist/counselor pays heed to the client’s opinions and point of view. FIT engages both parties. This breeds synergy and understanding among the two parties that are bound together by a common goal.

Through the use of MyOutcomes’ FIT tools such as SRS and ORS, therapists/counselors can increase client engagement which helps strengthen the client-therapist relationship– the therapeutic alliance.  Research indicates a strong Therapeutic Alliance is one of the main contributing factors to successful outcomes. Finally, Feedback Informed Treatments have been also found to reduce drop-out rates by half because clients feel more engaged.

In fact, MyOutcomes’ SRS and ORS are two of the few FIT tools recognized by the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.
